GROUP SESSIONS

THURSDAYS

12:15pm - 1:15pm

The Feldenkrais Method is a somatic education method that uses gentle movement and directed attention to help people learn new and more effective ways of moving. It was developed by Moshé Feldenkrais (1904-1984), a physicist and engineer who was also a judo master and student of neurophysiology. The Feldenkrais Method is based on the idea that our movement patterns are influenced by our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. By becoming more aware of our movement habits and learning new ways to move, we can improve our physical and emotional well-being.

There are two main branches of the Feldenkrais Method: Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) and Functional Integration® (FI). ATM lessons are typically given in a group setting and involve participants moving slowly and deliberately through a series of guided exercises. FI sessions are one-to-one and involve the practitioner using light touch to help the client explore new movement patterns. They suggest, through gentle touch and movement, expanded possibilities for new movement patterns which are more comfortable, efficient, and useful. Feldenkrais sessions are flexible in their approach, determined by your needs. you may lie comfortably on a table designed specifically for the work, or do some of the lesson sitting or standing. As needed, the therapist may also use various props to support your comfort, to make certain movements easier, or to clarify a movement.

Each Feldenkrais session relates to a desire, intention, or need. The session is carried out without the use of any invasive or forceful procedure. Through rapport and respect for your abilities, qualities, and integrity, the therapist creates an environment in which you can learn in safety and comfort. The session is developed, specifically for you. you will learn how to reorganise your actions in new and more effective ways through the experience of comfort, enjoyment, and ease of movement.

The Feldenkrais Method has been shown to be effective in improving a variety of conditions, including:

  • Back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Headaches

  • Painful joints

  • Balance problems

  • Posture problems

  • Stress
